After armed gang activity pushed Haiti into a state of emergency, assistance in the capital was halted except for hot meals to displaced people.
Overview
Shared meals will help conflict-affected families and support livelihood programs.
Haiti is in the throes of a hunger crisis, with up to 4.7 million people - nearly half the population - facing food insecurity. Adding to the country’s urban struggles is the deepening problem of climate change, the impact of which is felt most by vulnerable communities prone to natural disasters. This year, the World Food Program will work to restore local ecosystems as natural barriers against climate impacts, implementing soil-and-water conservation activities and providing communities with the training and tools they need to boost agriculture. The initiative aims to support 250,000 people in 2023, with participants helping construct protective assets while receiving cash support. WFP has already started work on building longer-term resilience in Limbé, in the Nord department, limiting disruptions to food production and people’s access to water. Rehabilitating irrigation canals, building dry walls and planting trees (pineapple and elephant grass) helps to reduce flooding and protect crops. The addition of a 6,000-gallon reservoir has also provided local communities with unlimited access to drinking water and a reliable water source for crops. In the coming months, WFP will work to strengthen the local environment while protecting communities from the worsening impacts of the climate crisis.
