Incessant rains in March, April and May triggered floods across most of Afghanistan. WFP provided affected households with high-energy biscuits, a nutritional supplement and bread in the aftermath, and will also focus on flood mitigation projects.
Overview
Shared meals will help provide emergency humanitarian assistance to families in Afghanistan including school meals, cash and nutrition.
Afghanistan is one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, with two-thirds of the population in need of assistance in 2023. Decades of conflict, a staggering economic crisis and the effects of the climate disaster have left communities across the country vulnerable. Three droughts in five years have struck farming and the latest wheat harvest covers less than half of what is needed in the country. Increased restrictions placed on women mean most secondary school girls are missing out on their education and malnutrition amongst young mothers has hit record highs. The World Food Program is on the ground and has reached nearly 23 million people in 2022. WFP plans to help 15 million people through the coming winter months with monthly food distributions, prevention and treatment of malnutrition and blanket supplementary feeding in hunger hotspots. WFP is also providing nutritious school snacks to primary school children and supporting livelihood initiatives such as marketable skills training and backyard gardening.
